Classical Violin Techniques and Sound

Classical Violin is one of the most highly technical and difficult instruments to master. It demands a great deal of discipline and many of the techniques require years of practice.

The term Classical generally applies to western European artistic music spanning from the Baroque period (1580-1750), through the Classical period (1730-1820) and the Romantic era (1800-1910).

Classical Violinists strive for pitch accuracy and intonate notes precisely while liberally applying vibrato, which typically oscillates below the targeted pitch. This vibrato gives string ensembles that lush chorus effect. Violinists also carefully articulate individual notes in faster passages.

Bowing techniques are also highly evolved and diverse with Classical Violinists.  They tend to utilize the entire bow from tip to frog and play with more dynamics than many of the other styles.

Classical Violin characteristics:

  • Accurate intonation and position changes into upper register

  • Wide variety of specific bowing techniques

  • More liberal use of vibrato

String players intonate notes precisely while liberally applying vibrato which typically rolls below the intended pitch. This gives ensembles that lush chorus effect.

Celtic Fiddle

The defining characteristics of Celtic Fiddle are the rapid, rhythmic bow articulations and rolling note ornamentations on either side of the melody note.

Gypsy Violin

Gypsy Violin often uses harmonic minor or double harmonic minor Byzantine tonalities combined with wider emotive vibrato.

Country Fiddle

Country Fiddle is unique stylistically because the players often slide into the intended notes. Rhythmic sawing bow paterns give this style it’s characteristic propulsion.

Cajun Fiddle

Cajun music is dance music plain and simple. This style is all about bow rhythms and open notes are often dragged along with the melody notes to add gumbo.

Electric Violin

Electric Violinists often use digital and analog effects the same way electric guitarists would. Fretless violin gives the ultimate flexibility for bending into and out of notes.
